    It was difficult at first . Everybody expected the understudy to get the role and then this Irish guy comes over. It was the time when IRA bombs were going off in England ; there was a lot of anti-Irish feeling . You had to prove that you could do it, being Irish you also had to prove you weren't a drunken Mick and it is a difficult enough role whithout people you will fail . 

     

    Ce fut difficile au début . Tout le monde s'attendait à ce que la doublure ait le rôle et c'est ce type Irlandais qui arrive . C'était l'époque où les bombes de l'IRA éclataient en Angleterre . Le sentiment anti-irlandais était énorme . Alors tu dois prouver que tu peux bien sûr tenir le rôle mais étant Irlandais tu dois aussi prouver que tu n'es pas un soûlard de Mick  et c'était un rôle assez difficile sans qu'en plus on souhaite que tu échoues 

     

    soûlard de Mick ... c'est un terme xénophobe anti-irlandais qu'il a entendu à son encontre à son arrivée à Londres,  terme péjoratif, une insulte - comme paddy  - mais c'est une insulte ethnique  encore plus argotique,  faite par les américains au temps de l'immigration forte irlandaise  ou par les anglais désignant les Irlandais catholiques, en français  l'équivalent serait rital ou bougnoule auquel on adjoindrait un adjectif du style 'sale rital'
